The Israeli Air Force destroyed six buildings in south Beirut, estimating that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was hiding somewhere there.
“It is very difficult to imagine him coming out alive from such an attack,” said an Israeli official, as several Jewish media outlets reported that Nasrallah was killed in the attack on his underground headquarters.
This fierce attack followed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the UN General Assembly. What did Netanyahu say? Israel will win at any cost. No matter what Washington says, no matter what the rest of the world says.
The fatal reason is that as long as the war continues, Netanyahu will rule.
President Biden limited himself to issuing a statement that he knew nothing about Netanyahu’s decision to demolish six buildings in Beirut in pursuit of Nasrallah. After all, the US no longer has any influence over Netanyahu’s government. But the Israeli prime minister knows that the US will be on his side if a major war breaks out in the Middle East.
Netanyahu relies solely on violence
As in Gaza, more bombings are likely to occur in southern Lebanon. If it’s not a land invasion. But this is not political strategy, but massacre. It’s not counterterrorism. Deportation and flight, death and misery are the fertile ground where terrorism thrives.
After 358 days of war and tens of thousands of deaths, the Israeli army did not expel Hamas from Gaza. Now it is repeating in Lebanon what failed in Gaza against an enemy that is militarily equipped by Iran and has 150,000 rockets.
There is something crazy about Netanyahu’s logic: if we can’t wipe out Hamas, let’s try the same with Hezbollah. Instead of negotiating a ceasefire in Gaza and establishing a peaceful post-war order, he is intensifying the war in southern Lebanon.
The US, EU, Qatar and Saudi Arabia call for a ceasefire in Gaza and southern Lebanon to slow down this frightening and growing dynamic. Because in the background you can see a big fire, a war between Israel and Iran, which neither Tehran nor the US wants. The Abraham Accords, by which Israel sought reconciliation with all anti-Iranian states in the region, collapsed.
Now Israel depends only on firepower to achieve so-called “peace”
A “peace” that will be based on submission and abandonment of the principles of the dignity of each State and international law.”
Colonial “logic”
“Peace”, according to Netanyahu, should not be afraid to resort to brutality if exercised against an enemy who is not considered worthy of human dignity. The “logic” of the colonialists, of course!
Without a doubt, the question of guilt and innocence in the ongoing war in southern Lebanon is complex.
Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israeli territory since October 8. Since then there has been a low-speed military conflict. Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes on both sides of the border.
The Israeli logic is that if Hezbollah’s rockets stop, there will be peace on the northern front. Hezbollah’s logic is that if Israel ends the war in Gaza, there will be peace on the northern front.
Israel pursues the legitimate objective of allowing refugees to return to their homes in the northern part of the country. However, this will cost tens of thousands of innocent people.
The flagrant violation of international law and the values of democracy requires a radical change of attitude on the part of Europeans who, for the most part, have remained inactive, if not even tolerated, this attitude of the Israeli government.
The United Nations International Court of Justice (ICJ) confirmed last July what the entire world has seen and understood for decades: that the Israeli occupation and colonization of the West Bank and East Jerusalem is a violation of international law. Why Netanyahu wants to make the two-state solution unsustainable…
Now, the number of Lebanese killed in just a few days has surpassed 700 and 42,000 in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war.
