Former First Lady of the United States Melania Trump told in a rare interview broadcast today on Fox News how she survived the assassination attempts on her husband Donald Trump, calling it a “miracle” that he survived.
She was in New York when, on July 13, the former president was shot during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“I ran to the TV and went back to the scene. I researched it. I was just a few minutes late (…), but when I saw it (…) nobody knew yet. Because when you see him down and you don’t know, you don’t know what really happened,” he said.
The shooter was killed shortly afterwards and Donald Trump suffered a minor ear injury.
Melania Trump thanked the Secret Service agents tasked with protecting Donald Trump, calling them “fantastic” despite criticism of the security measures taken during the rally.
The former first lady also referred to the second assassination attempt on the Republican, at his golf course in Florida, on September 15.
“I think both cases were really miracles. If you really think about it, July 13th was a miracle.”
Melania Trump, who tends to stay out of the media, gave her first interview in two years to promote her memoir, which will be released on October 8, less than a month before the November 5 presidential election that could see her husband return to the White House.
Politicians’ wives often play a prominent role in the campaign, but Melania Trump has avoided her husband’s rallies, fueling speculation about their relationship.
The 54-year-old Slovenian former model was also absent from Donald Trump’s trial in New York in the spring, at the end of which he was found guilty of falsifying documents with the intent to conceal, shortly before his 2016 presidential election victory, a payment made to a porn star to prevent her from revealing a sexual relationship she said she had with him.
In recent days, Melania Trump has posted a series of videos on social media.
In one of them he appears saying that the media does not talk enough about the assassination attempts against the 78-year-old former president.
“I have so many questions. What happened? It’s not normal. And isn’t it really shocking that all these acts of violence were directed at my husband?” she says.
“Especially when we hear the opposing party leadership and the mainstream media describing him as a threat to democracy, giving him vile epithets (…). This has to stop. The country must be united.”
