Wrestling star Alan Vera — who narrowly missed out on making the U.S. Air Force Olympic roster earlier this year — has sadly died at the age of 33… after suffering a medical emergency while playing soccer earlier this summer.
Director of USA Wrestling Government Rich Folder introduced the tragic information on Wednesday … revealing that Vera was in the hospital fighting to recover from cardiac arrest on July 29 when he passed away.
“The wrestling community mourns the loss of a great champion whose unimaginable life impacted so many within USA Wrestling and around the world,” Bender said.
ONE GoFundMe The webpage created in Vera’s honor acknowledged that the athlete suffered “a surprising infection” over the weekend — which led to his death on Monday night.
Vera, who was born in Cuba, competed for the Cuban National Team in the 2010s… and shone, winning bronze at the 2015 Pan American Games and gold at the 2016 Pan American Championships.
Shortly thereafter, he immigrated to America and, after obtaining his citizenship, competed on numerous occasions for Team USA, winning four senior national titles.
Vera has also been a member of the USA Wrestling Greco-Roman National Team for the past 4 years.
“Since he came into my life in 2016, he has been a true leader, always ready to do something for those in need,” said his coach. Herb Househe said. “Your selflessness and dedication have had a lasting effect on me.”
Vera leaves her spouse, Elena Pirozhkova — a two-time U.S. Olympian — and a newborn daughter, Alina.
TO TEAR APART.
