A passenger was killed after a gunman stormed a Los Angeles city bus early Wednesday, prompting a slow police chase through downtown before the suspect was finally arrested, authorities said.
The gunman boarded a city metro bus with the driver and two passengers shortly before 1 a.m. in South Los Angeles, according to the city’s police department. The department described it as a hostage situation.
Officers approached the bus as it slowly drove away, and police pursued the driver at gunpoint for the next hour. It does not appear the suspect was ever behind the wheel, police said.
How was he arrested?
Police used spike strips, which punctured one of the tires. After traveling more than 7 miles, the bus finally stopped at a downtown intersection and the suspect surrendered, authorities said.
The bus driver was seen on TV footage climbing out of the bus window.
A man was found inside the bus with gunshot wounds, but details about what led to the shooting were not immediately released. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, ABC 7 reported.
