The Renault 5 It’s not the only iconic nameplate Renault plans to revive for the electric age.
A modern Renault 4 is also in development, and a prototype has been spotted again.
The original 4, also known as the 4L, was produced over 30 years agowhich finally ended in 1994. Available in a variety of body styles, though primarily a four-door hatchback, the 4 is a significant vehicle in Renault’s history, as is the 5, so it’s no surprise that the automaker is resurrecting the name.
The modern 4, which will likely be called the 4 E-Tech to signify its electric powertrain, will be a subcompact crossover. The design was previewed at the 2022 Paris auto show with the 4Ever Trophy Conceptalthough the styling of the production version was a little softer compared to the robust lines of the concept.
The concept measured 163.8 in lengthand the production version should be similar in size, meaning it will be larger than the 5 E-Tech, which measures 154 inches long, or just a little bigger than a Mini Cooper.
The 4 E-Tech will use the same CMF-B EV Platform of the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance found in the 5 E-Tech. Renault has developed a unique, lower-cost version of the platform that the automaker has dubbed AmpR Small.
Renault 5 E-Tech buyers will have 40 and 52 kWh battery options, which will be paired with corresponding electric motors delivering 120 and 150 hp. The 4 E-Tech is expected to sport similar options, although dual-motor all-wheel drive may also be available.
Look for the 4 E-Tech to debut later this year. A debut at the 2024 Paris Motor Show mid-October is expected. Sales in markets where the French brand operates are expected to follow shortly after, and prices will likely start higher than the promised 25,000 euros (roughly $28,000) that the 5 E-Tech will start at when it goes on sale later this year.
