Donald Trump said on Monday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants “so badly” for Vice President Kamala Harris to win the 2024 US presidential election.
“I see Zelensky is here, I think Zelensky is the greatest square in history,” Trump said at a rally in Pennsylvania.
Zelensky visited a munitions plant in Scranton, Pennsylvania – a key battleground state in November’s election – as part of a trip to support Kiev’s resistance to Russia’s war.
In fact, before moving to the US, he said that he hopes to meet with Donald Trump.
“Every time he comes into the country, he leaves with $60 billion… He wants the Democrats to win this election so badly. But I would handle it differently, I can achieve peace,” Trump said.
The Republican candidate added that if he wins the election, “the first thing I will do is call Zelensky and call President Putin and say, ‘You have to make a deal, this is crazy.’
Trump has repeatedly promised to negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine, though he declined to provide further details and did not say whether he wanted Ukraine to defeat Russia when pressed in the debate with Harris. He has also threatened to cut off U.S. aid to Ukraine.
While avoiding mentioning Trump by name, Zelensky said last Friday during an interview that if Western partners truly want Ukraine to win the war, they should do everything they can to help Kiev win “today, while all the officials who want Ukraine to win are in official positions.”
