Warships of the Russian Pacific Fleet and the Chinese Navy have sailed into the Sea of Okhotsk in the western Pacific as part of joint naval exercises, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported today, citing the Pacific Fleet’s press service.
The Sea of Okhotsk, in the western Pacific Ocean, lies between Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula to the east, the Kuril Islands to the southeast, and the Japanese island of Hokkaido to the north.
“During the voyage, the detachment of ships carried out joint maneuvers, encountered unmanned vessels of a hypothetical enemy, conducted reconnaissance and monitored the surface situation with the participation of helicopters,” Interfax reported.
Russia announced on Saturday that it is starting the joint Russian-Chinese naval exercise “Beibu/Interaction – 2024” involving anti-aircraft and anti-submarine weapons. The large Russian anti-submarine warfare destroyers Admiral Pandeleev and Admiral Tribuch, as well as the corvettes MPK-82 and MPK-107 are among the warships taking part in the drills, according to Interfax.
China is represented by the destroyers Xining and Wuxi, the frigate Linyi and the supply ship Taihu, the agency added. “The ships will fire artillery and also use anti-submarine and anti-aircraft weapon systems based on a unified plan,” Interfax reported.
