At least 30 decomposing bodies have been found on a boat sailing about 70 kilometers off the coast of Senegal’s capital, Dakar, the country’s armed forces announced today.
The Navy was informed of the vessel’s presence last Sunday night and a coast guard vessel was immediately dispatched to the maritime zone, the country’s Armed Forces said in a statement.
“So far, 30 bodies have been counted,” he emphasized, adding thatInvestigations will provide more precise information about the number of deaths and where the boat departed from.
Your identification process is difficult
The advanced state of decomposition of the bodies makes the identification process difficult, the army added.
The Atlantic migration route from the West African coast to the Canary Islands, commonly used by African migrants trying to reach Spain, is one of the deadliest in the world.
An unprecedented number of nearly 5,000 migrants died at sea in the first five months of 2024 trying to reach the Spanish archipelago, the organization Walking Borders announced in June.
