At least four people were killed and dozens more were injured in Alabama, USA, when a shootout broke out.
“We believe multiple gunmen opened fire on people” in the Birmingham neighborhood on Saturday night, Truman Fitzgerald, a police officer, told US media.
Three adults – two men and a woman – were found on a sidewalk, fatally wounded by gunshots, while the fourth victim succumbed to the hospital.
Dozens of other people were injured in the shooting, four of whom were in serious condition, Fitzgerald said.
No catch
Police have not made any arrests at this stage, he continued, appealing for witnesses to come forward to assist the ongoing investigation, as well as for businesses in the area to provide them with CCTV footage.
Police and firefighters were mobilized to the scene and the area was cordoned off.
The US, where there are more guns than civilians, has the highest rate of gun deaths of any developed country in the world.
Gun violence is an increasingly common scourge in the country as one government after another fails to take effective action against the phenomenon, the power of the gun lobby remains enormous, and many Americans don’t even want to hear about restrictions, much less part with their guns.
