The endless queues of cars at the city’s traffic lights are now a common phenomenon and the biggest suffering for drivers, with traffic problems on Attica’s roads being a problem that “suffocates” many drivers every day.
For this reason, the Attica Region, looking for ways to make things easier for drivers, moved forward last year in a strategic agreement with Google for the purpose of traffic management, but from which so far we have not seen results.
Introducing the Green Light project, Google believes there is plenty of room for improvement to stop traffic lights from being a major cause of urban air pollution. With this philosophy the company will continue change the way traffic lights work, with the use of Artificial Intelligence.
How Green Light Works
Leveraging millions of collected data points to create Google Maps, Green Light analyzes critical traffic parameters and intersections identified as problematic. Looking at all the data on traffic light cycle length, Green Light detects repeated patterns and suggests improvements to avoid the most common traffic jams.
If the new system determines that a traffic light is already working optimally, it will not intervene. However, if it identifies room for improvement, will “coordinate” multiple intersections to create a traffic flow that will pass through continuous green traffic lights, to avoid traffic on the roads.
In this way, not only will uncoordinated intersections be synchronized, but it will also be achieved the ideal moment for traffic lights for more efficient traffic flow along the road.

Applying this AI model, according to Google, can be completed in just five minutes, on existing installations and without the need for additional hardware.
If implemented, Green Light will continue to monitor traffic trends to assess the impact of the changes it makes and calculate emissions reductions after implementation. However, the question remains as to why it has not been implemented yet!
