Under the European Commission’s new initiative, outdoor spaces proposed to be smoke-free include:
- Outdoor recreation areas where children can gather, such as playgrounds, amusement parks, and swimming pools.
- Outdoor spaces linked to health and education spaces (hospitals and schools).
- Public buildings.
- Bus stops and stations for other means of transport.
More than 700,000 people lose their lives due to tobacco consumption, thousands of them due to second-hand smoke and aerosols.
We recommend measures to protect citizens from new smoking products and extend smoke-free environments to key outdoor areas.

Health policy is the responsibility of the Member States
Citing your recommendations World Health Organization (WHO)The Commission proposes that Member States extend smoke-free policies to products such as electronic cigarettes.
The European Commission stresses that the recommendations to better protect people from exposure to passive smoking are addressed to the Member States. As it clarifies, since health policy is the responsibility of the Member States, countries are invited to implement these recommendations through their own policies, as they see fit, i.e. taking into account national conditions and needs.
