- Nissan GT-R R35 to cease production in 2025
- Nissan developing new GT-R, but hasn’t decided on powertrain yet
- An electric GT-R using solid-state batteries is a possibility
The current generation R35 Nissan GT-R is finally end of production next yearafter 17 years of production. That’s twice as long as most other vehicles have a lifespan, but if Nissan had its way, the GT-R would remain in production well into the next decade.
That’s according to Pierre Loing, Nissan’s global product chief, who said Top Gear in an interview published Friday, that it is only due to regulations that production is ceasing.
“It has been on sale for 17 years and we would like to keep it for another 17 years, but the regulator gives us some problems,” he said.
The R35 GT-R was revealed in 2007 and arrived in the US as a 2009 model. It leaves the US after 2024 and sales in Europe and some other markets such as Australia have already ended. In the case of Europe, the car in its current form falls on the wrong side of noise and emissions regulations, while in Australia it does not meet the latest crash safety rules.

Nissan already has confirmed on several occasions that a successor, an R36is planned, though there will be a gap before the car arrives, possibly spanning several years, which is not unusual for the GT-R. Why the delay this time? Nissan is still debating whether the new car should be a hybrid or electric vehicle, according to Loing.
When asked if an electric GT-R would be use solid state batteriesa technology that Nissan had already indicated it would be ready for production around 2028Loing said it was a possibility. He clarified this by saying that solid-state batteries would solve many of the current problems with electric sports cars, such as battery weight and overheating issues that hamper performance.
Nissan Hyper Force Concept
Nissan last year displayed the Hyper Force Conceptan electric sports car equipped with solid-state batteries. It packed 1,341 hp and featured many GT-R styling cuesalthough Nissan hasn’t said whether the concept in any way previews a new GT-R.
When a new GT-R arrives, Nissan could also have a third sports car in the form of a modern Silvia. Nissan’s planning chief Ivan Espinosa has revealed that he is trying to get the green light to production of a new Silviaand that his team is already planning an architecture for the car.
