“When a zillion, a trillion people think you’ve been dead for 15 years, it scares you,” Steve says of the rumors that have haunted him since his departure from the children’s show.
Rumors of Steve Burns’ Death hit Steve harder than his followers thought.
Nickelodeon’s unique host Blue’s Clues could be very much alive and well, and until recently reconnected with the present. However, in the early 2000s, some people falsely claimed online that he was not.
The truth is that people believed he died in a tragic and mysterious way.
“Everyone thought I was dead for a while,” he told New York Instances in a print interview on September 18, noting that it made him something of a city legend. “That damage, to be honest. And it kind of messed me up because this was happening while the internet was just starting to come into its own. Nobody, including me, was kind of ready for the degree of consensus that this represented.”

“When a zillion, a trillion people assume you’ll be dead in 15 years, it scares you.”
Steve was the star and host of Nickelodeon’s teen TV show Blue’s Clues from 1996 to 2002. After his departure from the present, rumors began and followed him for years. It was one of the many explanations why he decided to stay away from social media and the general public eye.
However, the 50-year-old finally put the rumors to rest when he resurfaced on social media a few years ago.
The host spoke about his departure in a video shared on Twitter in honor of the show’s 25th anniversary.

“I didn’t write it,” Steve said of the video that saw the alum clarify his departure from the series. “I just stood in front of the camera and said what was on my mind. I wanted to continue the dialogue that I started a zillion years ago with everyone.”
The video touched the hearts of those who watched it Blue’s Clues with Steve after they were kids and well into their adult lives.
“Do you remember when we were young, we used to run around, hang out with Blue, figure out clues, talk to Mr. Salt, freak out about the mail and do all the fun stuff?” he recalled while wearing his signature green shirt in the video. “And then one day, I was like, ‘Hey, guess what? Big news. I’m leaving! This is my brother Joe. He’s your new best friend.’ And then I got on a bus and left and we didn’t see each other for, like, a really, really long time? Can we just talk about this?”
Since the video was published, Steve has been taking to social media from time to time to keep in touch with the psychological health of his followers.
In a recent video, Steve simply sat down and asked how his followers were doing, pretending to listen to their response and nodding along. Followers were quick to share with Steve what they were up to — both the happy moments in their lives and the sad ones.
