Transformers One Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura hinted that the film could be the beginning of a trilogy.
The animated film – starring Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson and Jon Hamm – is due to hit cinemas on Friday, and the producer has now hinted that there could be more episodes in the series if the film impresses at the box office.
When Collider asked Di Bonaventura and director Josh Cooley if a trilogy was possible, the producer said, “I don’t think anything has changed for us.”
“The truth is, you never get to the second movie unless everyone shows up at the box office. We both said to ourselves, ‘It’s too hard to make a good movie to start thinking too much about the second movie.’”

Di Bonaventura – who has been linked to the franchise since 1986 THE Transformers: The Movie – teased that the upcoming film would have several story threads concerning Optimus Prime (Hemsworth) and Megatron (Henry) that could easily be picked up in a future film.
He said: “Along the way, there were ideas that we thought, ‘Well, that doesn’t fit here. Let’s hold on to it. Let’s not forget that idea.’ Although I’m sure we forgot some of them.”
Cooley agreed and added that they were definitely toying with the idea of making more entries in the series, but emphasized that he and Di Bonaventura would wait to “see what happens” with the new film.
He said, “I can’t help but… Yes, we were thinking about this story for this moment, for this movie, but we’re in the last year of a movie where I can’t help but think, ‘Well, how would this naturally progress?’
“So we have some ideas, we talk about some things and we will see what happens.”
Transformers One opens in theaters on September 20.
