The joint willingness of Athens and Nicosia to coordinate actions on the Cyprus issue, but also in the context of the escalating conflict in the Middle East, was underlined by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis during their meeting at Maximos Palace.
After welcoming Mr Christodoulidis, the Prime Minister stated that “we are looking forward to the UN General Assembly and, as always, Athens and Nicosia are coordinating their actions in view of the imminent developments on the Cyprus issue.”
“We will have the opportunity to take a comprehensive look at the outstanding issues at a time when there is growing concern about the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East,” he noted, stressing that “Greece and Cyprus are pillars of stability in a geopolitically troubled region. Especially at this juncture, our coordination is more necessary than ever.”
“Create conditions to restart talks”
For his part, Nikos Christodoulidis expressed his special joy at visiting Athens. “Yesterday he participated in an event to mark the 50th anniversary of the invasion, an event that was well attended and is indicative of our common concerns, given the multiple challenges we face,” he said.
“We will be together in New York next week, a crucial week. But we will continue on the path that we have demonstrated with actions and not with words to create conditions for the resumption of talks,” the Cypriot president assured.
“For us, the current situation is not the solution to the Cyprus problem,” he clarified, concluding: “I am sure that by solving the Cyprus problem through the normalization of Greek-Turkish relations we will contribute more to what Greece and Cyprus prove: that they are pillars of security and stability in this area of particular geopolitical importance.”
