Mario Draghi Speaking in Strasbourg and presenting the EU competitiveness report, he said the EU must focus on three critical issues: closing the “innovation gap” with the US and China, developing a joint plan to link the goal of deregulating carbon emissions with increasing competitiveness, but also strengthening Europe’s security and reducing its dependence on foreign economic powers.
Preserving the European way of life will depend on improving competitiveness, and improving competitiveness requires closer cooperation and integration among European nations, he said in his speech.
In a debate among MEPs that followed Draghi’s speech, many speakers agreed with his analysis that the EU economy urgently needs to change course.
The EU must focus on competition and innovation in key sectors of the economy, as well as more public and private investment in social, green and digital transformations, MEPs stressed. Some speakers called for greater sovereignty and freer markets, arguing that the fight against climate change is sabotaging the European economy. Others noted that growth is compatible with clean and innovative technologies and social investment that will be needed to help citizens adapt their skills.
