The craze surrounding the HBO documentary series “Chimp Loopy” has become quite lucrative for the sanctuary that now houses the show’s star, Tonka the chimpanzee.
A representative for Save the chimpanzees tells TMZ … all eyes are on her nonprofit after Tonka was seen thriving there in the final episode of “Chimp Loopy,” which was created by the same director as “Tiger King.”
In fact, Save the Chimps has seen a notable increase in donations… a 200% increase, to be exact.
In the month the streak began, 206 new donors brought in more than $20,000 in contributions… considerably more than the 103 donors who brought in $5,450 previously.
Not only that, but Tonka has also attracted quite a bit of online traffic to the sanctuary… including a 7,000% increase in their website. They’ve gained 5,500 new social media followers since the streak began — 4,400 new Instagram followers and 1,100 new Facebook followers.
It probably helps that Tonka looked so happy and healthy when “Chimp Loopy” wrapped up its run last week… with many fans wondering what happened to the chimp after the cameras stopped rolling.
We’re told Tonka is doing great with his new family of 17 chimps at the sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida… where he turns 33 on October 5.
The organization plans to do something really special for Tonka’s big birthday… including a fundraising campaign where followers can “adopt” the beloved chimp or reward him with some of his favorite things — bananas, nuts, and blankets.
Tonka was previously owned by Tonia Haddixthe self-proclaimed “Dolly Parton of Chimps,” who lost custody of him after the filmmakers of “Chimp Loopy” informed PETA of the primate’s whereabouts out of concern for his safety.
