MG Select premium car dealership network announced for Indian market
JSW MG Motor India has unveiled a new sales channel, MG Select, which will cater to its upcoming premium vehicle lineup. Aimed at introducing “new-age luxury” models, MG Select showrooms will operate in 12 major cities by Q1 2025, with plans to expand to smaller cities as well. These outlets will be distinct in both their aesthetics and communication strategies, offering a unique identity in terms of dealership experience.
Focus on new energy vehicles (NEVs)
MG Select showrooms will have a strong emphasis on New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), which include hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars. According to Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer, JSW MG Motor India, this focus is driven by the growing interest in EVs in the luxury segment, where electric vehicles already account for 7% of sales, as opposed to just 2% in the overall market. The company believes that electrification is a crucial direction for its premium offerings.
No fixed price differentiation
Unlike brands like Maruti Suzuki, which separates its premium lineup under the Nexa brand, MG Motor has chosen not to set a fixed price point to differentiate the MG Select vehicles from its standard lineup. Instead, differentiation will come from the luxury features these vehicles offer, positioning them as “affordable luxury.” Gupta stressed that MG will prioritise locally assembled models even for its top-end vehicles, reinforcing the company’s focus on local manufacturing.
Cyberster Sportscar likely to lead the lineup
Among the first models to be sold through MG Select showrooms is expected to be the MG Cyberster, an electric sports car that was shown earlier this year. This model is seen as a “halo product”, serving to shape the brand’s image and spearhead its premium portfolio. MG has announced plans to launch four new models through MG Select over the next two years, with the Cyberster a likely frontrunner.
Reseller Expansion and Engagement
Existing MG dealers have been invited to open MG Select outlets, with many expressing interest. The company is also keen to expand its Select outlets to smaller towns, reflecting a wider ambition to reach a wider customer base.
The introduction of the MG Select marks a significant shift for the company into the premium segment, with a focus on electrified models and a new approach to luxury. While the specifics of the upcoming models are still under wraps, MG’s strategy appears to align with broader industry trends toward electrification and localized production.
