Oscar Piastri won his second career victory in Baku today (15/6).
The McLaren driver left pole-sitter Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) in second and George Russell (Mercedes) in third in a… crazy finale in Azerbaijan, marked by the accident between Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez.
Winner in Hungary in July, Piastri did it again this Sunday in Baku. The McLaren driver made an excellent overtake on Leclerc on lap 20 and then held off the Ferrari driver.
Bad, because the Monegasque was seriously threatened by Perez and Sainz in the final laps of this Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
But a spectacular crash between the Spaniard and the Mexican on the penultimate lap saved Leclerc. Ferrari and Red Bull ended up in trouble after Sainz’s left-rear wheel hit Perez’s right-front as the two drivers battled for the podium.
George Russell did not let the opportunity pass unexplored and completed the podium by taking third place.
McLaren welcomed the result with a big smile, as with the victory of the 23-year-old Australian, the British team took the lead in the constructors’ standings with a 20-point advantage over Red Bull, helped by Lando Norris’ fourth place.
Starting from 15th on the grid after an unsuccessful Q1 yesterday, the Englishman from Bristol made the most of it thanks to a one-stop recovery and a good defense against Max Verstappen, who has seen victory since June 23 and Spain.
