The Minister of Development, Takis Theodorikakos, sent a message of strengthening controls, but also of cooperation with the market to reduce prices, in the meeting he held with representatives of supermarkets, food industries and multinationals.
“Amid difficult circumstances, the battle to reduce the cost of living continues with planning and persistence. Especially for basic living supplies and food, which fall within the remit of our ministry, as our goal is to support the average Greek family and household in every way,” he said, stressing that “controls are being expanded and intensified in dozens of businesses, hundreds of products and in e-commerce, where many violations of consumer rights have been identified.”
“We are strengthening the independent Competition Authority and working with the Regions to participate in audits. Consumers can now be better informed through the updated e-katanalotis application. We are firmly in contact and cooperation with entrepreneurs, as we identify with citizens’ demand and expectation for social responsibility on the part of companies,” he added.
Theodorikakos spoke of “positive indications” and added that “industries and supermarkets are forced to reduce their average profit and reduce prices, especially in the autumn, when schools open and for many families additional expenses are necessary.”
He finally stressed that “the effort to deal with the austerity is comprehensive for the government: the Ministry of Finance for the reduction of bank interest rates, the Ministry of Energy for electricity prices, the Ministry of Navigation for ferry ticket prices. Together, we fight every day to support citizens.”
