After releasing her new single and video for “Fortunate” last week, Halsey has stated that she “regrets coming back” after some fans criticized her return to music.
In a post on her Tumblr page, tiredandlonelymuse, the singer acknowledged that she is upset with fans who “show up to give their opinion on how much they hate me or how terrible I am.”
“My own followers are way meaner to me than anyone else on the planet,” she wrote. “I’m not speaking for all of you, after all. But before it was only a minority who were awful to me and now it seems like the majority only show up to give their opinion on how much they hate me or how awful I am. It’s hard to want to interact in an area that is completely devoid of any kindness, sympathy, resilience; or to be honest human decency. Especially after years of hiding from interactions for fear of this EXACT factor happening. I don’t know, man. I’ve pretty much lost my life. I’m not going to do anything anymore that doesn’t make me completely happy. I can’t spiritually afford that.”
While it’s unclear what criticism she’s addressing, Halsey has stated that after she was diagnosed with lupus and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder in 2022, she was excited to return to music. However, the response she’s gotten so far for “Fortunate” has led her to regret her decision.
“When I got sick,” she continued, “all I could think about was getting better so I could come back and be a part of THIS again, but I don’t even know what that is no more and I need to crawl into a gap and I regret coming again.”
“Fortunate” is the lead single from her upcoming fifth album, which currently has no release date. The song interpolates Britney Spears’ 2000 single of the same name, with Halsey claiming Spears herself gave it approval. For the video, she took inspiration from Spears’ visuals and her idea that fame isn’t always what it seems.
Shortly after the video’s release, Spears took to X (formerly Twitter) to claim that the depiction offended her and made her look like a “shallow pop star.” She quickly deleted the post and instead tweeted, “Fake info!!! That wasn’t me on my phone!!! I like Halsey that’s why I deleted it!!!”
Halsey responded by retweeting Spears, writing, “and I like Britney!!!! I always have and always will You were the first person who made me realize what it means to truly be impressed. And you continue to encourage me constantly.”
