There has been no official statement from the Israeli government or the Israeli army (IDF) regarding the news of Ismail Haniya’s assassination in Tehran. Hamas calls it a “cowardly Zionist attack” that will not go unpunished. Iran – more circumspect – announced that it was opening an investigation into the circumstances.
The first reaction from the Israeli side – without any mention, however, of whether Israel had neutralized the Hamas political leader – came from the far-right minister, Amichai Eliyahu.
“This is the right way to cleanse the world of this filth. No more imaginary “peace”/surrender agreements, no more mercy for these mortals. The iron hand that will strike them is the one that will bring peace and some comfort and will strengthen our ability to live in peace with those who desire peace.
Haniya’s death makes the world a little better,” he wrote in a post on X.
