It’s been almost 40 years since Rob Lowe’s coming of age comedy drama St. Elmo’s Fire first successful screensand the actor says a possible sequel is actually in the early stages of development.
Rob sat down next to your son and Unstable co-star John Owen Lowe29, while promoting the second season of his Netflix comedy series, and the handsome 60-year-old leading man spoke to ET’s Ash Crossan about the much-talked-about reboot.
Following the buzz of the recent documentary brats — which told the story of the so-called Brat Pack, a group of young actors, including Lowe, who dominated pop culture in the ’80s — there was renewed demand for a sequel to Lowe’s 1985 cult classic.
“We met with the studio and we’ve been talking about it for about four months,” Rob revealed, adding that the release of brats The documentary “only added to the excitement around it.”
“But it’s very, very, very, very, very early stages,” Rob added. “So we’ll see.”
Rob starred alongside Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy in the film, which follows seven friends fresh out of college as they try to navigate their post-college lives.
Meanwhile, John Owen — who refers to the film as “St. Elmers” — admitted he has not seen the movie.
However, they have worked side by side in his comedy series on Netflix Unstablewhere they play a fictional father-son duo. John Owen stars as Jackson, the shy, soft-spoken son of eccentric and semi-egotistical tech mogul Ellis — played by Rob.
“This whole show is based on his incessant trolling of me on his Instagram,” Rob joked. “So the very nature of that relationship, and being able to put it out there on a TV show, is so special.”
Unstable Season 2 premieres August 1 on Netflix.
