Ground forces will work through the night to control the fire that broke out at midday on Monday and is burning inland triangle formed by the settlements of Petries, Krieza and Alonia.
Extinguishing efforts are being hampered by strong winds blowing in the region.
The fire started around 3:17 p.m. in a wooded area near the Petries settlement and, as was known to the Fire Department, it immediately assumed dangerous proportions.
As was already known, the Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, went to the area urgently.
“Barrage” of 112 messages
It should be remembered that from midday onwards, the evacuation of residents of Eubeia was requested, with messages being sent via 112.
The last message was sent shortly before 8:30 pm to those in the area. Sieves. However, at noon and in the afternoon the areas were evacuated: Krieza and Petries.
A firefighter was injured
At the same time, according to the Fire Department, a Firefighter with a Five-Year Obligation who worked on the Evia fire was slightly injured. According to information from the Fire Department, he suffered minor burns and was taken to the Aliveri Health Center.
Powerful forces
189 firefighters are working to extinguish the fire, with 9 groups of pedestrians and 56 vehicles, as well as a large number of volunteers, as announced by the firefighters’ representative, Mr Vass Vathrakogiannis.
Before nightfall, 26 aerial vehicles, specifically 16 aircraft and 10 helicopters, including 2 for coordination, were “launched” to fight the flames.
Local government water tankers and construction machinery are assisting in the extinguishing efforts.
As a precaution, a fire-fighting boat headed to the area and the Coast Guard was mobilized with vessels close to the coast.
Additionally, ELAS forces were mobilized to facilitate the evacuation of residents.
The coordination of all firefighting forces is carried out by the OLYMPOS Mobile Operations Center.
Wind turbine explosion
As reported by evima.gr, due to the fire, a wind turbine exploded in the Petria area. The pieces of the exploded wind turbine fell along with the volunteers of the SAR312 team and the firefighters who worked in the area.
