Organizers of the 2024 Paris Olympics today apologized to Catholics and other Christians who may have been offended by a parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous work The Last Supper at the opening ceremony on Friday (26/7).
The piece featured 18 artists posing behind a long table, similar to the way Jesus and his 12 apostles are depicted in Da Vinci’s painting.
Among the performers were drag queens, a transgender model and a nude singer representing the god Dionysus, which drew condemnation from the Catholic Church.
“There was clearly no intention to show disrespect to any religious group. The opening ceremony sought to celebrate tolerance within the community. We believe this ambition was achieved. We are sorry if people were offended.”said the representative of the Paris 2024 organization, Anne Deschamps, at a press conference.
