Karen Read is heading back to court for round two — a judge just gave the green light for a second murder trial in the death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe …weeks after declaring a mistrial following a hung jury.
Massachusetts Judge Beverly Cannone set Read’s new trial for January 27, 2025… releasing the news Monday in front of prosecution and defense attorneys.
The date has not yet been set because Read’s lawyer, David Yannettimentioned to Judge Cannone that he has another trial scheduled for right before that.
But Read’s retrial may not even happen… Cannone said she will hear arguments Aug. 9 on a defense motion to dismiss the case, and she is waiting for a response from both sides before making her ruling.
The move comes after Read’s lawyer, Alan Jacksonargued earlier this month that a new trial would amount to double jeopardy.
He argued in legal papers that the judge should have acquitted Read — accused of drunkenly running over Jackson in 2022 — of both the murder charge and the charge of fleeing the scene causing injury and death… because the the jury unanimously found her “not guilty” about these accusations.

But, as we reported… there was no mention of the jury’s unanimity when the judge declared the trial a mistrial.
It was revealed that the jury was only hung on the manslaughter charge, with a 9-3 vote leaning towards guilt. But for now, it looks like a new jury will have a chance to reach a verdict.
