The president of the New Left, Alexis Haritsispoints to the need to restart discussions on the cypriotunder the auspices of the UN General Assembly, for a final, just and sustainable solution.
In his message on social media, Mr. Haritsis, in his message on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and illegal occupation, states: “50 years since the Turkish invasion, 50 years of illegal occupation. Half a century later, let us not forget the disaster. Let us not forget that the Junta in Greece and its like-minded people in Cyprus paved the way for the invasion with the Makarios coup d’état. The ultra-patriots and nationalists bear all the historical responsibility for the national disaster.”
“Cyprus is currently experiencing events of honour and commemoration on the one hand, and, unfortunately, of provocation and tension on the other. The solution to the Cyprus problem is a historic necessity. The glimmers of hope for a resumption of negotiations within the UN framework should open up even more after the end of the anniversary events. Let the 50th anniversary be the starting point for finally closing this open and deep wound. We must not succumb to the devotees of no solution and de facto division, who perpetuate instability and tension. Especially at a time when the south-eastern Mediterranean is troubled by crises, wars and uncertainties,” adds Mr. Haritsis and concludes:
“The interest of your people CyprusGreek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, is resuming discussions under the auspices of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for a final, just and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem. For a bizonal and bicommunal federation based on the decisions of the UN Security Council. The future does not belong to the nationalists and patriots. It belongs to the people of Cyprus.”
