111 Masters Scholarships offered young men and women the Greek Shipowners’ Unionfor the academic year 2024-2025.
The scholarship award ceremony took place yesterday, Wednesday, July 17, at the archaeological site of Olímpia. The event was hosted by the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni.
The Greek Shipowners’ Union has always placed the Education sector and the granting of scholarships at the heart of its social work, supporting in practice the country’s new generation.
Following her commitment to “Society and Navigation Always Together”, The Greek Shipowners’ Union last year established the greatly expanded “UNION FOR EDUCATION +100 SCHOLARSHIPS” programme, as well as the symbolic “Aristeia” scholarship for the best of the best. The scholarships are intended for studies in Greece and abroad, in postgraduate programmes at pre-doctoral level, lasting one or two full years.
More than 1,500,000 euros
This year’s program has been numerically reinforced and totals 110 plus the “Excellence” scholarship, with its value exceeds €1,500,000!
Specifically, they were granted scholarships for 46 young people and 65 young teachers, from 20 regions of our country, so that they can pursue their postgraduate studies in 10 scientific areas, in 14 countries, in 52 universities in Greece and abroad!
At the event, the absolute protagonists were the academics, who were addressed by the President of the Hellenic Shipowners’ Union, Melina Travlou, who introduced themselves and presented themselves for their dreams and the value of their erudition and excellence, sending their resounding message to the new generations, in a particularly moving atmosphere, in the emblematic space dominated by the Pillars of Olympian Zeus.
All and all, the 111 scholars meet the strict criteria of the notice and achieved particularly high academic performance. It is worth mentioning that they were selected from a total of 650 applicants by the scholarship evaluation committee, composed of Members of the Boards of Directors of EEE and SYN-ENOSE, namely the Chairman, Mr. Nikolas Veniami, Mr. Dino Karousi, Mr. Alexandros Pappa and Mrs. Efi Strataki. In addition, Professors, Mr. Andreas Papandreou, Professor of Environmental Economics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Mr. Ilias Papaioannou, Professor of Economics at the London Business School, as well as the Artistic Director of the Athens Concert Hall, Mr.
Finally, the humanitarian footprint of the Hellenic Shipowners’ Union is strong and consistent, having provided over €130 million in recent years in the areas of health, education, social assistance, food aid, public interest projects, as well as crisis response.
L. Mendoni: Multifaceted social contribution of the Greek fleet
In her welcome address, Lina Mendoni, Minister of Culture, mentioned, among other things, the following:
“The initiative of the Greek Shipowners’ Union to support Greek children at one of the most decisive stages of their lives is just one aspect of the enormous social work carried out, silently and effectively, by the main institutional body of our maritime transport. However, it is also an action that does not have a social retribution character, but rather an undeniably multiplicative and indeed long-term character, as it invests in the future of the new generation, in the future of the country itself. A symbolism that is strengthened, of course, by hosting the event at Olympia, this great landmark of classical Athens, which embodies the ideal of excellence. The Union’s scholarship programme is part of the multifaceted social contribution of the Greek Navy, which in recent years has channelled more than 130 million euros into social responsibility actions, supporting education, culture, health, social structures, as well as vulnerable or affected groups of the population. A valuable and irreplaceable contribution, with truly ancient roots, since the time of shipwrecks, navigation and its people have been at the forefront of contributing to intellectual and social life, along with their decisive contribution to the growth of national wealth. For the umpteenth time, the Greek Navy has shown itself to be not only socially sensitive, but also loyal to its own values. For two centuries it has invested in excellence, in the exploration of innovation and in the assimilation of all new knowledge, in order to dominate global shipping and rise to the top. Congratulations are rightfully due to the scholarship recipients. I am confident that you will make the most of the new opportunities offered to you and I wish you to see all your plans come to fruition, no matter how much work it takes.”
M. Travlou: We honor the new generation of excellence
Melina Travlou, President of the Greek Shipowners’ Union, said:
“Before I begin, I would like to thank the Coast Guard who is always close to us and especially Captain Christina Karlavitis.
Dear and dear companions,
Dear colleagues,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Mrs.
Thank you for your kind words and to the Ministry for welcoming us to this historic monument.
Today here at Olympia we honor the new generation of excellence and send a resounding and meaningful message of positivity.
In the modern world where traditions are shaken and values are constantly challenged, we, guided by our young people, strengthen, protect and shield our constants.
The Greek shipping belief in the common good is linked to excellence, to education, to our culture, to our healthy and positive future.
At this point, I would like to thank my 65 colleagues, who together have carried out the numerically largest postgraduate scholarship programme not only of the Hellenic Shipowners’ Association, but also of our country. The total value of the programme exceeds 1,500,000 euros.
Today’s event is a recognition and a reward for 46 young people and 65 young masters from 20 regions of our country, who are pursuing their postgraduate studies in 10 scientific areas, in 14 countries, at 52 universities in Greece and abroad.
Our 111 scholarship holders will spread their wings and represent us with dignity in University Institutions around the world, just as our ships represent us in the seas of the world, paying homage to and highlighting the quality of the leader of navigation, the Navigation of the Greeks.
Today’s event is also a source of great pride for all of us, but especially for the families of our scholarship recipients, who respectfully embraced their children and contributed to strengthening their skills and pursuing their dreams. Please accept our congratulations.
Ladies and gentlemen,
and now the floor goes to our protagonists, to the worthy ambassadors of Greek academic excellence to the ends of the earth.”
After the scholarship recipients’ speeches, in her second speech, EEE President Melina Travlou, addressing them, emphasized:
“It’s exciting… Guys, a big ‘congratulations’ to you, to your parents, but also to your teachers, those who helped you get here.
I am very excited and very proud of this new generation of our country, of our homeland.
With the hope that everyone returns and finds opportunities to progress here, in our country!”
The event was coordinated by Ms. Christina Karlavitis, Captain of the Coast Guard and Head of Department of the Communication and Information Office of the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy.
