Former VIBE magazine editor-in-chief Danyel Smith recently alleged that Sean “Diddy” Combs threatened to kill her following a disagreement over a 1997 magazine cover.
The New York Times reports that the CEO of Bad Boy allegedly intimidated the journalist after a dispute over his December 1997/January 1998 double-issue covers.

Diddy allegedly threatened VIBE magazine editor
Danyel claimed that they photographed Combs for the cover of the magazine, and a few days after the photo shoot, he asked to see the image they chose to use before publication. However, Smith informed him that this was against company policy. She said, “After I said no, we heard that he planned to come to our office and force us to show him what we had chosen — and make us choose something else if he didn’t like what he saw.”
Danyel said they implemented a security plan in case the rapper showed up at the office. Diddy Sean allegedly had a reputation for being rowdy. The previous year, he was found guilty of criminal mischief. Sean allegedly threatened a New York Post photographer with a gun. Additionally, there were rumors that he attacked a woman at his record label’s office.
Smith claims Combs called her again, asking to see the photos. She reiterated that it was not VIBE’s policy, and Diddy responded by threatening to see her “dead in the trunk of a car.” Danyel did not take the threat lying down. She contacted her lawyer, who then contacted Sean. An apology fax reportedly arrived within two hours.
