Alexis Ohanian I wasn’t surprised to hear the wife Serena Williams‘ recent million dollar confession.
The 41-year-old Reddit co-founder spoke to ET’s Denny Direct about the 2024 ESPY Awards red carpet on Thursday, offering his reaction to the 42-year-old Williams’ recent attack. The Hot Ones revelation that she tried (unsuccessfully) to deposit a $1 million check at a drive-through ATM.
Ohanian said he “already knew” the story, but was “shocked” by the situation.
“It’s never been about the money,” he said of his wife’s massive tennis career. “She started this as a kid, right? She got into this professional sports journey so early and the priority was just to be the best. And so even something that we would all take for granted — like, of course you wouldn’t cash a check that big — for her, that’s a byproduct of doing the work.”
He added: “God bless you.”
Ohanian noted that he has “been to a lot of ATMs” in his life, but now prefers a simpler method of managing money.
“As soon as the technology got better, I obviously started doing the photo with the app,” he said. “Nobody has time for an ATM anymore.”
Ohanian was on hand to support Williams as she hosted the ESPYs at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The couple was accompanied by their 6-year-old daughter, Olympia, while baby Adira — who turns 1 next month — was not in attendance.
“I’m a very proud dad,” Ohanian said of his eldest daughter. “Olympia is almost seven and this is a fun night to cheer for mommy with me.”
Ohanian couldn’t help but gush over the mother of two’s star power.
“Look, it’s not the same as a Grand Slam final, but it’s pretty close,” he joked of her hosting gig. “I think you know she’s a star on the court, off the court, on stage, off the stage. I think she’s going to do really well tonight.”
The 2024 ESPYS were hosted by Serena Williams and aired live on Thursday, July 11 at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
