Benji Gregory — best known as the child star of the sitcom “Alf” — has died, TMZ can reveal.
The actor’s sister Rebeca told TMZ that his brother was found dead in his car in a Chase Financial Bank parking lot in Peoria, Arizona, on June 13.
His death certificates confirm that date, and the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office tells us that Benji’s cause of death is still pending.
Rebecca tells us that her brother suffered from melancholia, bipolar disorder and had a sleep problem that kept him awake for days at a time.
People close to him believe he went to the bank to deposit residual checks on the 12th, fell asleep in his car and tragically died of heatstroke due to the intense Arizona summer heat.
Benji was with his service dog Hans, and the animal also died.
Rebecca tells us that her family is grieving a terrible loss and appreciates everyone’s thoughts and quotes. She suggests that donations in Benji’s name might be appreciated for both The Actors Fairness Foundation and the ASPCA — causes he would have supported.
Benji shot to fame playing Brian Tanner in 101 episodes of “Alf,” which aired from ’86 to ’90.
He only had a few different gigs here and there, but stepped out of leisure in 2003 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy… later graduating from college to become an airman’s mate. In 2005, he received an honorable medical discharge from the Navy.
