Tomorrow, Thursday, the Karamandan Children’s Hospital in Patras is expected to reopen, as announced by the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, during his visit to the nursing institution, which was evacuated as a precaution yesterday afternoon, due to the major fire in the area of the Nursing Home.
“I am glad that in the end the damage is minor and I think we will be ready to operate again within 24 hours. Everything went as it should,” the health minister said.
Referring to yesterday’s evacuation operation, he said that “everyone contributed to making yesterday a small miracle”. The hospital was evacuated very early as a precaution. When the fire arrived here, the hospital had no more patients. The staff took care to remove anything flammable. We were lucky because the fire protection system we recently installed during the renovation works worked immediately and the fire was extinguished relatively quickly, with only a small part of the fire having burned.”
Adonis Georgiadis congratulated the commander of the 6th health district, Yannis Karvelis, saying that “he immediately introduced the transfer of the hospital’s small patients and we managed to transfer all the people before the events, without posing any risk to the patients or any undue suffering.” “This was possible because the decision to preemptively evacuate the hospital was taken very quickly,” he added.
Furthermore, the Minister of Health thanked the administrator of “Karamandanei”, Aspasia Rigopoulou, as well as all the hospital staff for their efforts.
He also expressed his gratitude to the Firefighters and Civil Protection, as, as he noted, “they are fighting a huge battle against the flames”.
