The remains of an American climber who went missing 22 years ago have been found on a mountain in Peru where he was buried by an avalanche.
Peruvian police say they have found American mountaineer William Stampfl‘s mummified body on Friday near a campsite on Mount Huascaran, one of the highest peaks in the Andes.
William was attempting to summit Mount Huascaran in 2002 when an avalanche buried him under snow and ice. Police say his still-frozen body was found about 17,000 feet (5,200 meters) down the 22,000-foot (6,768-meter) mountain.
It’s unclear exactly how people found William, but police say his body and clothing were preserved by the ice, snow and freezing weather… and he had his California driver’s license with him.
Graphic footage shows William’s body twisted and lying on the surface of the ice… he is still wearing his climbing gear, including some climbing boots.
Mount Huascaran is a popular climb… hundreds of people travel there every year with local guides and it usually takes about a week to reach the top.
William was climbing the mountain with 2 friends, Steve Erskine It is Matthew Richardsonin 2002, when they were buried by an avalanche.
Steve’s body was found shortly after the incident, but Matthew is still missing.
