An Arizona police officer got an unexpected surprise when he pulled over a sleek white Jaguar SUV… only to discover there was no one behind the wheel.
Check out the clip… After chasing a white Jaguar SUV for veering into the wrong lane and running a red light, an Arizona police officer walked up to the car, ready for anything — except discovering that he had picked up a self-driving Waymo taxi.
ICYDK, Waymo — run by Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company — is designed to stop when it detects emergency lights and sirens, but it appears this one actually “freaked out” — well, that’s according to the dispatch notes.
The shocked officer can be heard calling out to a company representative, saying: “Yes, there is a small construction area, and he has gone into opposite lanes of traffic, which is very bad.”
A Waymo support employee eventually showed up to help the officer.
Waymo later explained that the vehicle “encountered inconsistent construction signage” and ended up in an oncoming lane of traffic after being “blocked from navigating back into the correct lane” for about 30 seconds. That’s when the officer pulled up behind it.
Phoenix officials noted that the incident ended without any further action … because, according to dispatch notes, the officer “was unable to issue a ticket to the computer.”
Thankfully, no other cars were involved and no one was hurt. Just a high-tech hiccup and a good story for the cops!
