Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent a message of zero tolerance for behavior that “damages the credibility of the political system as a whole,” in the shadow of the uproar caused by the unprecedented episode starring former minister Lefteris Avgenakis.
“Citizens demand efficiency from the government and the political system first, but they also demand a lot from the behaviour of politicians. Nothing disturbs citizens more than the behaviour of those in power, which projects an image that politicians are in a different group of citizens who can behave differently than any citizen would behave,” he said during his meeting with President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou at the Presidential Palace.
“These behaviors cannot be tolerated and cannot be tolerated because they undermine the credibility of the political system as a whole and the effort we are making to build relationships of trust with citizens,” said the Prime Minister.
“The country has been through a lot, citizens’ trust in politicians has been damaged,” he added, recalling that “today marks 9 years since the ridiculous 2015 referendum that was the rise of populism.”
“I will insist on questions of ethics and style of political behavior,” he assured.
“First encouraging signs” in the war on precision
At the same time, Mr Mitsotakis stressed that as the European elections process has concluded, the government is starting to address the problems of citizens’ daily lives. Focusing on the problem of accuracy, he spoke of encouraging signs of price reduction.
“It is encouraging that for the first time we have a real price reduction in supermarkets. It is a first encouraging sign that the war we declared against punctuality is starting and yielding results,” he said, assuring that “the effort will continue until inflation returns to pre-crisis levels.”
