‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ Recap: Here’s the Story
After a hiatus of decades, the Beverly Hills Cop the franchise returns, with Eddie Murphy once again starring as the comedic lead. Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD!
Beverly Hills Cop 4 has technically been in development since the mid-1990s. In other words, it spent that time in “development hell.” The silver lining is that it at least dodged the bullet of being targeted. by Brett Ratner.
Axel F begins when the titular detective returns to Beverly Hills because his daughter, Jane, is in danger. She’s a defense attorney representing an alleged cop killer. In a stunning dose of realism, the big bad is a member of the police force.

Kevin Bacon clearly enjoyed leaning into his villainous role as Captain Grant of the BHPD. He (the character, not the beloved actor) turns out to be in cahoots with a cartel.
Speaking of charming actors, Joseph Gordon-Levitt appears as Detective Bobby Abbott. He is Jane’s ex, which creates obvious tension with Jane and her father.
Judge Reinhold (fun fact: that’s just his name; he doesn’t actually sit on the bench) reprises his role as Axel’s fellow private investigator, Billy. It’s a smaller role, but it might have been awkward to film without him.
Obviously, there’s plenty of action. Helicopters, gunfights and lots of laughs along the way.
‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ Ending Explained
So what happened to Billy? After he had Jane investigate Captain Grant and then called Axel to town, Billy disappeared. The cartel caught him snooping around and kidnapped him. Eventually, Axel and Bobby freed him from a warehouse.
But the big bad guy isn’t in the warehouse, but in a mansion. He’s holding Jane prisoner (classic bad guy stuff) and is planning to kill her to hide his crimes (also classic bad guy stuff).
The final shootout sees the protagonists killing cartel members and the (extra) corrupt police officers.
Grant exercises his privileges as primary antagonist by hurting Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Ftitular protagonist.
Meanwhile, Bobby is the one who kills Grant. This may feel a bit like the passing of the proverbial torch. 30 years have passed in real time and in the movies, and the film makes that clear.
As a plus, Jane can prove that her client, the alleged cop killer, is innocent. They now have proof of what Grant was doing — and that his henchmen had framed Sam (her client). That’s a done deal!

Movie #4 brings new nuance to the franchise
Axel Foley has a new depth. Yes, even action comedies can do that.
Jane holds him responsible for the way his fixation on work has alienated his family and for the way he hasn’t tried as hard as he could to maintain communication with her.
For a movie with so many opportunities for laughs, it ends on a tearful note—with Axel admitting his mistakes. He and Jane seem to be even by the end, but it’s an emotional scene.
