As residents of Jamaica prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Beryl, Sheryl Lee Ralph is asking his followers to send their prayers. Abbott Elementary School The star took to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday morning to share an update on the weather from the island, where her family gathered for her son Etienne Maurice’s wedding on July 6.
In the video posted to X, Ralph shares what the weather is like as the island braces for the impact of the Category 4 storm, which is expected to make landfall at noon on July 3, according to the National Hurricane Center.
“From the looks of the sky, it looks like Beryl is going to arrive a lot sooner than the news keeps saying,” says Ralph, 67, as he looks out the window. “So it’s very calm here in Jamaica, the sky is so beautifully clear. And they said the sea looked like glass today.”
Ralph shared that she had taken “all the furniture out because, you know, those things fly,” as she encouraged others to follow the island’s curfew, “stay inside,” and “stay off the road.”
“I hope you’ve put oil in your lamp and are taking extra care,” she adds. “So for everyone out there on the island, we remember that Gilbert was a three and Beryl is a four. Wow. God bless you, good night.”
The Emmy winner captioned the post: “Goodnight from Jamaica 🇯🇲 Pray for us as you pray for others.”
Ralph later shared a photo of a fallen tree, explaining that the tree had been “blown down by Hurricane Beryl” and “narrowly” missed hitting his neighbor’s house.
“I’m thanking God because this would have been a disaster! To all my praying people, keep it up!!” she captioned the post.
When she couldn’t sleep, Ralph posted another update that she would be watching Netflix’s new superhero series, Supercellwhich she later described as “excellent”.
“I just love the idea of supernatural abilities that can be used to help the world, like diverting the eye of Hurricane Beryl south of Kingston so my son’s wedding can go off without a hitch this weekend,” she added.
Although Ralph was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, his mother was Ivy Ralph OD, a beloved Jamaican fashion designer and creator of the Kariba suit. The actress often returns to her home in Jamaica, where she received an Honorary Order of Jamaica in 2022 for her “important contribution as an actress, cultural ambassador for Jamaica and for her contribution to the international film industry.”
As Ralph shared, she is in Jamaica for her son’s wedding to longtime girlfriend and ABC News journalist Stephanie Wash. Etienne — whom Ralph shares with her ex-husband, Eric Maurice — announced their engagement last July after two years of dating.
Etienne, 32, posted on his Instagram Stories on July 2 that he was “taking a walk” on a sunny day in Kingston and that the weather was “beautiful.”
“I hope Hurricane Beryl isn’t as bad as people are thinking, but it will pass,” he said in the video. “Disappointed that some people won’t be able to make it to the wedding, but you know, life goes on. It will go on. And we’re getting married on Saturday. So, with that said, Happily Mauriced is still in full force. Whoever’s here, will be here. There’s nothing I can do, I’m leaving it in God’s hands.”
Ralph previously told to ET that her son’s future bride “fits and blends in very well with our family” as she spoke about the engagement.
“I’m so happy, I’m so inspired, I love this!” she said. “That’s all you can ask for, for your children to be happy at different stages of their lives.”
The actress joked that she wanted the same happiness for her daughter, Ivy-Victoria, 29, who she also shares with her ex-husband.
Ralph happily noted that after marriage, she will eventually be a “Glamma.”
“We called my grandma Nana, they called my mom Grandi, and I was like, ‘Nuh-uh, Glamma,'” she shared. “Glam-mom, Glamma, that works (too), they can say that. I’ll be G-mama, yeah.”
