VinFast electric cars to be assembled at Tamil Nadu plant, launched by Diwali 2025
Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast is set to enter the Indian market with a strategic shift towards local assembly. The company plans to start assembling its EVs at a new plant in Tamil Nadu by March 2025, moving away from its initial plan to import the vehicles.
The Tamil Nadu plant is expected to begin CKD (completely knocked down) assembly operations in early 2025, aiming for a faster market entry. VinFast’s first locally assembled EV is projected to be launched during the festive season next year.
VinFast has already taken significant steps toward this goal, including filing a patent for the VF3 and beginning road testing for the VF e34. The shift to local assembly using CKD kits should reduce import duties, allowing the company to allocate the saved funds to brand building and marketing efforts.
Local assembly is expected to build trust among suppliers, dealers and buyers, providing a solid foundation for VinFast’s operations in India. The company is optimistic that this strategy, coupled with competitive pricing, will enable it to achieve a maximum production capacity of 50,000 units in its first year.
We have seen several prototypes of its cars in India since 2022. The brand has not confirmed the cars it plans to launch in our country.
