Emma Roberts is being candid about everything from her love life to her life in the public eye. the role their famous relatives played in her career — and she’s reflecting on what she’s learned during a life spent in front of the camera.
Roberts recently sat down for a profile piece for To boastand talked a little about being in a relationship with a man who is on the fringes of show business but — unlike many of her previous loves — is not an actor.
“One day the veil was lifted and I didn’t want to date actors anymore,” Roberts, 33, shared. “It’s hard, I think, for two actors to be together. I’m trying to think if I’ve ever seen it done successfully.”
Roberts has had a string of high-profile relationships with actors — including a years-long on-and-off romance with Evan Peterswhich began in 2012 and finally came to an end in 2019 after the couple broke up and got back together several times, eventually getting engaged before splitting for good.
Soon after, she began an affair with Garrett Hedlund, and in June 2020, news broke that Roberts was pregnant with their first child. The couple welcomed son Rhodes in December 2020but it’s over ending the relationship in 2022.
“Also, the actors I’ve worked with are very method actors, and that’s something I find extremely difficult to relate to,” Roberts said in her interview, “at least for me, especially the characters they were playing.”
Throughout the lengthy interview, Roberts also addressed the ongoing conversations about “nepo babies” in Hollywood and criticized the New York Magazine exposé that actually sparked the conversation, in ways she feels are hardly fair or productive.
“It was a cheap shot to put all the celebrity kids on the cover of a magazine about baby bodies,” said Roberts — who is the daughter of Oscar-winning actor Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts, and who was notably not included in the controversial cover image, nor mentioned as part of the story in the controversial article.
“It’s as if maybe the ‘Nepo Baby’ conversation had been a more interesting and intelligently written article Vanity Fair with nuances,” Roberts said. “But instead it was a kind of viral hatred of people.”
In Roberts’ opinion, her family connections apparently hurt her more than they helped. According to the actress, “I lost more jobs than I gained from being in the business.”
“People have opinions, and sometimes they might not be good opinions about people in your family,” she explained. “I’ve never gotten a job because of it, I know I’ve definitely lost a few jobs because of it.”
Earlier this year, ET spoke with Roberts at the New York premiere of Feud: Capote vs. The Swansand the actress said she is grateful to have an amazing career and her beautiful son in her life.
“I’m loving it. I feel so lucky. I just finished a gig, and tomorrow I’m going to see my 3-year-old son,” he said. Scream Queens actress said. “And I get to celebrate that tonight, so life is good. I’m very grateful.”
Roberts was also in awe of her adorable son and can’t believe how fast he’s growing up.
“He’s faster than me,” she said, laughing. “But that doesn’t mean much. He’s — he’s just, he’s magical. He’s an angel.”
