Delhi Mumbai Expressway covers 1,386 km, 80 percent work completed
The ambitious Delhi Mumbai Expressway, a major infrastructure project, is on track to significantly improve connectivity between Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra by the end of this year. Spanning 1,386 km and divided into nine phases, this expansive project is nearing completion, with eight phases expected to be operational by December.
Currently, two phases of the expressway are operational, facilitating traffic movement. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Authority of India (NHAI), over 80 per cent of the work on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway – the longest expressway in the country – has been completed. This includes 96 per cent of the work from Delhi to Vadodara, which covers approximately 845 km. The remaining work is projected to be completed on schedule.
Several crucial segments are scheduled to open by December, including Sapur to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (95 km), Surat to Virar in Mumbai (291 km), Bharuch to Surat (38 km), Madhya Pradesh to Gujarat border (148 km) and Sawai Madhopur to Jhalawar (159 km). Also, the Vadodara to Bharuch segment (87 km) has been completed but is awaiting public opening.
The currently operational sections include the 293 km stretch from Delhi to Dausa Sawai Madhopur and the 245 km segment from Jhalawar to Ratlam and the MP/Gujarat border.
Looking ahead, the final leg connecting Haryana to Mumbai is expected to be completed by the end of this year. However, the section connecting DND Delhi and Jewar to Sohna is scheduled to be completed by June 2025, requiring an additional 90 km of expressway construction.
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is set to streamline travel from Sohna, Haryana, traversing Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat before concluding in Maharashtra. This development is expected to notably benefit commuters from major cities including Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Jaipur, Ajmer, Kishangarh, Kota, Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Sawai Madhopur, Bhopal, Ujjain, Indore, Surat and their neighbouring areas.
