“Distance” of the parties from the compromise solution that “could be found” for the Cypriot stated the Personal Envoy of its Secretary General UNformer Foreign Minister of Colombia, Mr. Holguin, according to July Security Council President and Permanent Representative of Russia, Ambassador Vasily Nebenzia.
The Russian ambassador, responding to a question from the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, stressed that “it is regrettable, but the last chance we had was in 2017 in Crans Montana, which unfortunately was lost and since then there has been no visible sign, tangible progress in the negotiations on the Cyprus issue.”
“Hardening of the positions of some plans on both sides”
“Furthermore, we see the hardening of the positions of some plans on both sides. Now there is the question of extending Ms Holguin’s mandate, but that is absolutely the prerogative of the Secretary-General, because she is his Personal Envoy. She is not the Envoy of the Security Council, nor of the Special Representative for the Cyprus conflict. We will see. It is really up to him (the Secretary-General) to make the decision. As for Colin Stewart’s regular briefing by UNFICYP, that will concern developments on the ground, the issues he is dealing with. I do not expect anything special from this update,” he noted.
