Normani suffered a painful setback that led her to decide not to perform at BET Awards 2024 on Sunday in Los Angeles.
Fans were looking forward to the “Motivation” singer’s return to the stage for the first performance of her new album, Dopamine. However, moments before the awards ceremony, Nornami, 28, announced that she would no longer be performing after suffering an injury during rehearsals.
“I’m more frustrated and disappointed than anyone believes me. I wanted to come here and give you an update that during rehearsals for BET, I was in a very serious accident and injured myself,” she wrote on her Instagram story . . “Normally I’m good under any circumstances, but unfortunately due to my doctor’s orders, I’m just not able to make this performance happen. I desperately wanted to give you my best on that stage, but performing would delay my healing and I have been going through a process and doing my best to understand my feelings about it.”
She added: ‘I’m devastated and I hate feeling like a disappointment to you, but I have to focus on recovery at this time. Trust me, I hear you and I see you. and also, getting back to doing what fulfills me the most – BEING ON STAGE.’
Normani ended her message by assuring her fans and supporters that she would return to the stage and perform as soon as she got better.
“Thank you so much for understanding. Sending my love to BET for giving me and all the other beautiful black women this opportunity,” she wrote. “This is definitely NOT how I envisioned this weekend, but trust me I will be defending everyone from home tonight. I am so sorry…
Normani’s next slide was a photo of her on crutches, with a bandage and a surgical boot on her right foot. The “Wild Side” singer did not give any further details about her injury.
Last month, Normani released her highly anticipated debut album, Dopamine. Fans were eagerly awaiting her return to the stage, as the BET Awards would mark her first live performance.
In the six years since her split from Fifth Harmony, Normani has experienced a number of setbacks.
In June 2023, Normani revealed that his father, Derrick Hamilton, was diagnosed with cancer a year after her mother, Andrea Hamilton, battled cancer for the second time. As a result of her parents’ diagnosis, Normani said she postponed her album to focus on her health. According to the singer, music ultimately helped her get through the family’s difficult times.
“Honestly, music helped them through cancer treatment. I remember being on FaceTime with my mom while she was having chemo and she asked me, ‘How is the studio today?’ Who wears what?. ‘As hard as it was for me to not be with them as much as I wanted to, ultimately moving on made the circumstances of the last few years feel a little lighter for my parents.’
