Following the party’s internal elections held yesterday, Venko Filipce is the new leader of the official opposition party, Social Democratic Union (SDSM) her North Macedonia.
Venko Filipce prevailed by a large margin over the other three candidates for SDSM leadership.
Venko Filipce, 47, succeeds Dimitar Kovačevski as leader of the SDSM, who resigned at the end of May, taking responsibility for the party’s heavy defeat in the parliamentary elections held in North Macedonia on May 8.

Neurosurgeon by profession Venko Filipce is considered a close associate of former SDSM President Zoran Zaev and in the period 2017-2021 served as Minister of Health in his government.
The SDSM, after its defeat in the parliamentary elections, went into deep introversion. The new leader of this party, in his first statements, promised to unite the faction and lead by example and guaranteed that SDSM will be an open and modern party, ready to face the challenges that lie ahead.
