Jimmy Rollins says he wouldn’t mind if an MLB player never wore number 24 again… saying TMZ Sports he would be down there to see Rob Manfred retire Willie May‘ famous number throughout the league.
The possibility of the honor has been raised by baseball fans across the country in recent days… after May unfortunately he died at the age of 93 old on June 18th.
The Seamheads argued that because of its impact on the league, Mays’ old number should receive the same treatment as just Jackie RobinsonNumber 42 has already been taken by MLB.
When Rollins went to LAX this week, he said he’d be up for anything… saying, “It would be a great honor.”
J Roll went on to say that he thinks Mays is “probably the greatest baseball player to ever play the game” – and someone who deserves such a huge tribute.
Mays, of course, has as good a case as anyone for the honor… as he’s played in over 3,000 games, hit 660 home runs, and posted a .301 batting average. He’s also won two MVPs and been named an All-Star an impressive 24 times.
It is unclear, however, whether Manfred is considering this at the moment.
