2024 has its first mega-blockbuster and it’s Pixarin Inside Out 2.
After the last weekend of June, Inside Out 2 raised US$1.014 billion worldwide; US$469 million in the United States and US$545 million in the rest of the world. This makes it the first film of the calendar year to surpass $1 billion at the global box office.
Obviously, this also makes it the highest-grossing film of the year so far. The #2 film is Dune: Part Two which grossed a relatively paltry $711 million worldwide.
Inside Out 2 It is also the first film to gross $1 billion worldwide since last summer’s biggest hit. Barbie. This film finished its box office haul with $1.445 billion worldwide, a number that may be difficult to Inside Out 2 to the top.

Yet, Inside Out 2Pixar’s massive worldwide success is a major coup for Pixar after several years and films that saw its fortunes decline significantly. Disney has released all of the beloved studio’s Covid-era films straight to streaming, and its track record since returning to theaters has been very spotty, especially given the costly flop Light-year. Last years Elementary received some of the weakest reviews in Pixar history, but ended up grossing a relatively solid $496 million worldwide.
That being said, the fact that Inside Out 2 already has doubled the “relatively solid” gross value of Elementary It says a lot about how big this movie is and how much Pixar needed this kind of box office success to help reestablish their stature as a major financial force in the animation world. (Creatively, I don’t think their stature has been questioned; they still make wonderful movies.)
Next we’ll see how the film compares to the big competition that opens in theaters this weekend, Despicable Me 4who will fight for the same family audience over the long Independence Day weekend. Despicable Me 3 grossed $1.035 billion in theaters in 2017. The most recent prequel in this franchise, Minions: The Rise of Gru, earned $940 million in 2022.
