Maria Sakkari started this year’s Wimbledon adventure with a victory, defeating American McCartney Kessler in straight sets (6-3, 6-1).
Sakkari didn’t start well and had a break in the 5th game, falling behind (2-3), but responded immediately with his own “break” on Kessler’s serve, tied and won the next three games to reach 1-0.
The Greek took another break at the beginning of the second set, the American did the same (1-1) and in the next game led 40-0.
At that moment, however, Sakkari won the next five points and from then on were unstoppable, emphatically reaching 6-1 and qualifying.
In the next round of the English Grand Slam, she will face the winner of the doubles between the Dutch Arancha Roos and the Chinese Yue Yuan.
