He denies any wrongdoing in relation to her. fire in hydra, Daniyar Abulgazin one of the richest men in Kazakhstan.
As the BBC notes, Daniyar Abulgazin is one of eight Kazakh citizens who were on board the luxury yacht last month and who are being prosecuted by the Greek authorities for complicity in the arson.
The businessman had rented the boat “Persephone” and was on site when the fire burned 300 hectares on the island of Hydra.
Initially, there were reports that the fireworks were launched directly from the yacht, but reports that they may have been launched from a beach on the island are also being investigated.
The case sparked outrage from the start, especially after reports that the yacht’s passengers returned home shortly after the June 21 fire.
What does the businessman say in his statement?
In a statement, Abulgazin said he chartered the Persephone for a week and returned home the next day — which was always the plan.
He said he had spoken to “representatives of the Greek authorities, who made no complaints against me or my guests in relation to this incident”.
He was “surprised” to later learn of the allegations, Abulgazin said.
He added that he was “very sad” about the fire, but that neither he nor his guests did anything that could have caused the fire.
“We strictly follow the fire safety rules established on board. Neither I nor my guests asked the yacht’s crew or any third party to take any action that could cause a fire,” he said.
He also promised full cooperation with Greek authorities in their investigation. Kazakhstan does not have an extradition agreement with Greece, so it is unlikely that they would have to go there for questioning.
About that the captain and lieutenant are still in custody, while another 15 crew members who were initially arrested were released with restrictive conditions.
