ESPN stands firm in its decision to honor Prince Harry as Pat Tillman Service Award at this month’s ESPYs… doubling down and saying the Duke of Sussex is the rightful recipient of the honor.
As we previously reported, Tillman’s mother, Mary, was dissatisfied with this year’s choice for the award… saying there were many lesser-known candidates who deserve some recognition – and referring to Harry as “controversial and divisive” in the process.
ESPN Talent Pat McAfee also went after the selection … claiming it appeared the network was purposefully trying to cause controversy.
The outlet took note of all the outrage… and released a statement explaining more about why Harry won the award for all the work he’s done at his annual sporting event for wounded and sick military personnel.
“ESPN, with the support of the Tillman Foundation, is honoring Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, specifically for the work of The Invictus Games Foundation, which celebrates its 10th year of promoting healing through the power of sports for military service members and veterans around the world,” the network said. TMZ Sports.
“While we understand that not everyone will agree with every honoree selected for any award, the Invictus Games Foundation does incredible work and ESPN believes this is a cause worth celebrating.”
Of course, Tillman left his NFL career behind to join the Army after the 9/11 attacks… and tragically died in a friendly fire incident in April 2004.
The award – which was previously given to medical professionals who saved Damar HamlinTillman’s Life in January 2023 – honors those who reflect Tillman’s legacy through their actions.
Mary told the Daily Mail that she was not consulted about this year’s choice… but our sources say that has never happened in the past, as she is not associated with the Tillman Foundation.
Love it or hate it, Harry will receive the award on July 11th.
