Earlier this year, a mother’s eviction order for her son escalated to the point of her death. Conner Koboldwho is now 20 years old, is behind bars in Indiana on charges of strangling Shanelle Burns on February 5th, by PEOPLE.
Before her death, her 43-year-old mother served her with a conditional notice to live with her. At the time, he was 19 years old. Local prosecutors charged him with murder and aggravated assault in response to the incident.
Details about mother’s death after son’s eviction notice
As mentioned, on the date listed, Burns presented his son with two alternatives: he had to comply with certain conditions or be expelled from his home. She reportedly gave her 19-year-old son 30 days to secure a full-time job, clean his room and maintain cleanliness in common areas of the house, according to the Chicago Post-Tribune.
However, it appears that Conner did not take the eviction notice lightly. Sometime on February 5, a confrontation occurred. After allegedly strangling his mother, Conner called 911 multiple times.
According to court documents cited by WGN9 ChicagoConner asked the officer who pulled him over to handcuff him and put him in the patrol car. He reportedly admitted to the officer that he had “killed someone” inside the home in the 1300 block of Diamond Boulevard in
Valparaiso, Indiana.
Conner reportedly had superficial scratches on his face, according to the arresting officer. When officers entered his mother’s home, her lifeless body was lying in the living room. There were signs of a struggle inside the home.
An autopsy later determined that Shanelle Burns died of asphyxiation secondary to manual strangulation.
What happens next to Conner Kobold?
Conner has reportedly pleaded not guilty to the charges. Earlier this year, he filed a motion in court to represent himself.
When the judge asked him if he believed he had the “skills or abilities” to represent himself, his response was as follows:
“I believe my case is so unique that the only person who can explain what happened and why it happened is me,” Conner told the judge in February, according to the Chicago Post-Tribune.
During the same hearing, Kobold reportedly revealed that he had consulted five therapists and two mental health inpatient facilities.
According to PEOPLE, an online court filing shows that the court appointed him a public defender in April. With his trial set to begin in August, the bizarre eviction notice story is now gaining traction on social media.
Meanwhile, the 20-year-old was previously denied bail and reportedly remains behind bars at the Porter County Jail.
