The advance of the far right in France is unstoppable. Any result other than the extreme right’s victory in the first round of today’s parliamentary elections would be a surprise.
Nearly four in 10 French people will vote for Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardela’s National Rally (RN), according to opinion polls.
The only question is whether in the second round, next Sunday, the far right will have an absolute majority in the new National Assembly.
The RN is at 37%, ahead of the left-wing electoral alliance of the New Popular Front which remains at 29.5% and almost 17 points behind the liberal camp around President Emmanuel Macron.
As for the center-right Republicans? The party of former French presidents Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy is now fighting for its political survival, with many of its executives working with the far right in dozens of constituencies.
If the far right wins an absolute majority, Macron cannot avoid appointing Bardela as prime minister. Otherwise, he would completely ignore the will of the voters.
Macron is, of course, threatening that civil war could break out if the RN or the Popular Front win. “It is not the first time that the president has adopted a non-constructive attitude”, criticizes Macron, the director of Le Monde, Jerome Fenoglio.
Unbelievable comments coming from a head of state who constantly creates tensions. Rebuilding the destroyed political space of the Center would require humility and caution. But Emmanuel Macron clearly has neither of these virtues, and his entourage has never been taught to compensate for his imperfections.
Narcissism
Macron’s narcissism has exposed him and threatens to bring down the entire central bloc.
But Macron also performed a “miracle” on the left: he managed to unite four parties that had been arguing until now, leaving aside their differences regarding their attitude towards Ukraine, Russia, Hamas, Israel and everything that divides them.
After seven years in office, Macron has united against him people who – as it turned out – hated each other even more.
However, Macron managed to cause political hatred in his own camp as well. The specter of defeat can be seen in the speeches and faces of the Macronist candidates. Who supported him in his choices in the most difficult moments, often at the expense of their own convictions, as happened with the controversial reform of the pension system or the changes in immigration legislation, in an extreme right-wing direction.
Macron has thrown France into a political hole. The French president’s penchant for political gamesmanship may have propelled him to the top, but it now looks set to topple him.
Many analysts even say that the impetuous and solitary Macron cannot coexist psychologically with the far right and will resign at some point. Plunging not only France into chaos, but also the rest of Europe…
